Marina Tenorio

In this solo, inspired by the writings of American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892), choreographer Marina Tenorio addresses the causality of situations, their physical experience and transformation. Using improvisation within the choreography’s fixed structure, she guides through various aggregate states of body and space.

Our thoughts follow a seeming causality, the dependence of one thing on another, where one thought follows another or discontinues and jumps to something new. It is a similar case with movement: Our body is in a constant process, passing through states and attitudes which are more or less clearly separate from each other. Caught between improvisation and fixed structure, ...UND... traces this bodily flow and follows the logic of movement sequences, the rhythm of events and the responsive potential of the body. The conjunction of the title is not only a connection, but also the expression of a searching motion and a symbol of what is to be found in the body’s depths.

The solo is inspired by Walt Whitman’s poetry, whose narrator in Song of Myself (Leaves of Grass) passes through starkly contrasting emotional and physical states, dissolves his own borders and pursues the infinite. In her choreographic work, Marina Tenorio is seeking friction with the lyrical replicas, gets in touch with conscious and unconscious processes of the body, makes them visible and gives them shape.

She consciously exposes the reciprocity of this two-way relationship to the play of the light, to the silence of the moment, as well as to the music of John Cage. Influenced by this constantly shifting environment, her body becomes the setting for that which is not available, which takes place in the movements of the dance and continuously undercuts the manners of its perception.

Marina Tenorio was born in Moscow into a Russian-Brazilian family. She studied Flamenco in Sao Paulo and continued her artistic education in Moscow with Russian director Anatoli Vasiliev and Japanese choreographer and dancer Min Tanaka. At the same time, she was participating in productions of the Theater “School of Dramatic Art” as well as those of the dance group „Do Tantsa“. She is living and working in Berlin, …UND… is her final project for the MA Choreography at Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin / Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch“.
