Residence N°17 - Sandra Parker

with Rebecca Jensen & Steven Heather

Pairing sound and movement in an exploration of the lone body in space, Australian choreographer Sandra Parker in collaboration with Berlin based Australian composer Steven Heather present a new work-in-progress performed by dancer Rebecca Jensen.  An intimate and detailed study using minimal materials – one body, one speaker – our exploration will mine the correlations between fragments of sound and gestural action.  Our work will question how the body occupies choreographed time and duration in the ‘here and now’, yet carries the possibility of a trajectory that moves beyond the present moment.

Sandra Parker is an Australian choreographer based in Melbourne.  A two-year Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship grant supports her visit to Berlin.  In Australia, Sandra has made commissioned work for Tasdance, Dance North, Buzz Dance Theatre, Sue Healey's Vis-à-vis Dance Canberra, the Victorian College of the Arts and WAPPA (Perth); and several solo and group works.  In 1997 she created her first full-length pieces in absentia and Two Stories, touring in absentia to the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and The Performance Space, Sydney.

From 1998 - 2006 she was the Artistic Director of Melbourne's Dance Works, creating innovative collaborations with many artists and arts organisations, including Melbourne International Festival of the Arts 2000, 2002, 2003.  International projects include an Asialink residency to Tokyo, Japan and the creation of Span with Shelley Lasica and American Choreographers Bebe Miller and Susan Braham, for Danspace, St Mark’s Church, New York.  Sandra's work has toured nationally and internationally to the USA, Paris and Portugal. In 2007 Sandra Parker presented The View From Here at the Joyce Soho in New York City, and created Playhouse for the Guandong Modern Dance Company, China. In 2009 she presented Out of Light to critical acclaim, cited as "one of the best works of 2009" and nominated for five 2010 Victorian Green Room Awards.  In late 2009 she created an installation with Chinese artist Liu Bin during a Red Gate Gallery residency supported by the Australia China Council.  In 2011, Sandra undertook the development of a new ensemble work, The Recording, with assistance from Arts Victoria and the City of Port Phillip; and in early 2011 a three-month Housemate residency at Dancehouse, Melbourne, culminating in the presentation of a new work Document.
